01What the App does

The App helps you fact-check things you see online. You can:

• Take a Back Tap screenshot and have the App analyze it.
• Share a URL or text from another app and have the App analyze it.
• Paste text into the App and have it analyzed.

The App returns a verdict — true, false, misleading, unproven, or satire — along with the sources the AI consulted.

The App is a starting point, not a final answer. AI verdicts can be wrong. Always read the cited sources before acting on a verdict.

02The App is not professional advice

The App is general-purpose information. It is not:

• Legal advice
• Medical advice
• Financial or investment advice
• Journalistic professional reporting
• A substitute for your own judgement

If you need professional advice on any matter, consult a qualified professional. Do not rely on the App's verdicts to make medical, legal, financial, or safety-critical decisions.

03AI verdicts — accuracy disclaimer

The App's verdicts are produced by large language models that read public sources at the moment of your request. These models can:

• Misread the central claim of a post.
• Misjudge the credibility of a source.
• Be out of date (the model's knowledge cutoff differs from real-world events).
• Be wrong in ways that look confident.

We make a reasonable effort to design the system to be accurate — we use multiple models, web search for evidence, and citation of sources. But we do not warrant that any verdict is correct, complete, or current. The verdict is offered "as is."

You assume the risk of relying on any verdict. If you use the App's output to publish, share, accuse, defame, or make a decision that affects someone else, that is your judgement and your responsibility.

04Your responsibilities

You agree:

• You will only submit content you have the right to access. The App processes screenshots of, and links to, content you can already see. Don't submit content obtained illegally, in violation of someone's privacy, or in breach of a third party's terms of service.
• You will not use the App to harm others. Don't fact-check content for the purpose of harassment, doxxing, defamation, or any unlawful purpose.
• You will not abuse the service. No automated/bot use beyond your own personal fact-checking. No reverse-engineering. No attempts to exhaust our credit ledger or bypass rate limits. No attempts to extract our prompts or training data.
• You will respect intellectual property. The App is a tool you use against publicly available content. If you republish the App's verdicts, attribute them to the App and link to the original sources.
• You are at least the age of digital consent in your jurisdiction. 13 in the United States (COPPA), 16 in most of the EU, 18 in India (DPDPA). The App is not for younger users.

We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms or if your usage suggests automated/bot abuse.

05In-app purchases and credits

The App is free to install and includes 40 free credits to start.

Beyond the free tier, paid plans are available via Apple's App Store as auto-renewing subscriptions. Each fact-check costs a number of credits depending on input type (screenshot, URL, video, multi-image post). The exact credit cost is shown on the paywall and credit balance pill in the App.

Subscription terms:

• Pricing is shown in the App's paywall before purchase. Prices may vary by country.
• Billing is handled by Apple via the App Store. We never see your payment details.
• Auto-renewal: Subscriptions auto-renew until you cancel. You can cancel any time at least 24 hours before the next renewal via iOS Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions.
• Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Submit refund requests via Apple's reportaproblem.apple.com.
• Restoration: If you reinstall the App on the same Apple ID, tap "Restore Purchases" in the paywall to recover your subscription.
• Credits expire at the end of each billing period and are replaced with a fresh allocation on renewal. Credits do not roll over.
• No cash value: Credits have no cash value, are not transferable, and cannot be redeemed for refund.

If a subscription expires (cancellation, billing failure, or expiration), your tier resets to "trial" and any remaining paid credits are forfeited. Resubscribing grants the new plan's full credit allocation.

06Acceptable use of fact-check verdicts

You may use verdicts produced by the App:

• For your own personal information.
• To share informally with friends, family, or your audience, provided you (a) make clear the verdict came from an AI tool, (b) link to the original sources the App cited, and (c) accept responsibility for sharing.

You may not:

• Republish verdicts in commercial fact-checking products without our written permission.
• Use verdicts to harass, defame, or accuse a specific person without independently verifying.
• Misrepresent verdicts (for example, claiming "Is That Real? confirmed X" when the verdict was "Unproven").

The App's verdicts are licensed to you for the uses above. The App's code, design, brand, and trademarks remain ours.

07Liability — read this carefully

The App is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law:

• We disclaim all warranties (express, implied, statutory) including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement.
• We are not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, special, exemplary, or punitive damages arising from your use of the App, including reputational harm, lost profit, or harm caused by your reliance on a verdict.
• Our total liability for any claim arising out of or related to these Terms or the App will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or (b) ten US dollars (USD 10).

Some jurisdictions don't allow these limitations. Where law forbids us from limiting liability for something, we accept the minimum liability the law requires.

08Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless against any claim, damage, loss, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising from:

• Your use of the App in violation of these Terms.
• Content you submit for fact-checking that you did not have the right to access.
• Decisions you made in reliance on a verdict.

09Third-party services

The App relies on third-party services (OpenRouter, Apify, RevenueCat, Cloudflare, Brave Search, Serper, Apple StoreKit). Your use of the App is also subject to those providers' terms where applicable. We are not responsible for the actions or terms of those third parties; we are responsible for the data we route through them, as described in our Privacy Policy.

10Changes to the App and these Terms

We may update the App at any time, including adding, modifying, or removing features. We may update these Terms by changing the "Last updated" date and publishing the new version at isthatreal.app/terms. Material changes will trigger an in-app banner on next launch.

Continuing to use the App after an update constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

11Termination

You may stop using the App at any time by deleting it. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms or for repeated abuse. On termination, your right to use the App ends. Sections that by their nature should survive (Liability, Indemnification, Governing Law, Disclaimer) survive termination.

12Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising from these Terms or the App will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of British Columbia, Canada, unless the law of your country of residence requires otherwise.

If you are a consumer in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with mandatory local consumer-protection law, nothing in these Terms removes statutory rights you have under the law of your residence.

13Severability and entire agreement

If any clause of these Terms is held unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and the in-app AI consent acknowledgment, form the entire agreement between you and us regarding the App.
